The Ruined Lands
|

by MEL-. Aah it's been a really long time since I've posted poems here. This is another of my spontaneous attempts.
This poem is inspired by the "news" i read everyday. I've always wondered why there never is a day when nobody
gets killed, when nobody creates trouble, when nobody gets involved in an accident. It always happens. ..Thus I've
written this poem. I'll be posting poems here more often now. ((: Thanks for reading! I want my poems to affect
people, well.. I'm working on that. Anyway, feel free to comment even if it's negative and harsh. I need feedback! Poem was written on 11 May 2008.

Dewdrops,
melt in the strong embrace
Of the leaves
Of that ancient willow tree
As they disappear,
not a trace is left behind by the scorching sun

Inside -
the dark, dark shadows
the wretched silence
Something lurks within
yet all pale in comparison
to that -
that of the wicked maiden
whose identity you'd never guess.

The whispers are hushed
In this night of despair and trepidation
It sweeps across the entire place
Not missing out a single desolate corner
Loneliness is but an emotion
Bottled up inside.

Listen to the cold, shrill cries of those victims
The haunting melodies that ring in the air
They will never die down
No matter how much you try to convince yourselves
For the deeds were done,
and your black hearts have won,
So you think -

Presume all you want
But can you make out the jealousy in his voice?
For the dark hour has come,
and the blood will stain this city
Its crimson talons will reach out
Rip you apart and blind
the windows of your soul

Another war,
Another corpse.
Another murder,
Another betrayal.
Another casualty,
Another massacre.
Another lie..
They all lead to just another event of the past

The twigs are jumbled up with the cackling fire
Ashes and bones are dug up
From the soil
we live in
That very soil
that is the rooftop of a graveyard
which comes alive whenever you try to crush it
It never dies. The abandoned now have a home.
A home that you planned for them.
Should they thank you for it?

Words are useless
Yes, very much so
Can we answer for the innocence that has been lost?
Can we ever account for the pain that we have caused?
Because you can't just
Inflict the wound with a crooked, jagged knife
..and walk away with a pretentious look of remorse on your face.

Nobody -
Not a single pathetic soul in this world
Does not harbour evil thoughts
Because even when you do not kill,
You will always be a part of the chaos
The ceasefire, the politics, the protests,
The tragedy that repeats in our world everyday,
We all have a part to play
In this silly game that never stops

But don't get me wrong
I do not see it all as a game -
It is much more than that.

If you just look deep beneath the murky waters,
you'll see so much more.
The sin, the guilt, the pain, the hurt.
The tears running down the faces of the abused.
We call it "news"
While they scream and yell desperately for help.

As if once is not enough,
We repeat the scenes all over again with different faces.

In these storms
The lightning strikes down another
And yet another
The laughter is overwhelming
Ringing in my ear
Trying to cover up
To hide it all,
But grief will pulverize you into dust,
As the echoes of the deathly moaning are here to stay

..Stay FOREVER in the weakening heartbeat of this diminishing world.
